Category:Vortex Theory
This category collects vortex theories — accounts in which matter, fields or the structure of space itself are understood as circulation, rotation or eddies in a continuous medium.
The idea has a long and respectable pedigree. Descartes explained planetary motion by vortices in a plenum; Helmholtz's theorems on vortex motion in an ideal fluid led Lord Kelvin to propose in 1867 that atoms are knotted vortex rings in the aether, a theory pursued seriously by Tait and Thomson for two decades and abandoned only when the aether itself fell out of favour. Kelvin's programme is the direct ancestor of both modern knot theory and the ring models collected under Category:Toroidal Ring.
Entries here include vortex models of the electron and other particles, vortex accounts of gravitation and inertia, plasma vortex and filament structures (see Category:Plasma), fluid-dynamic analogies for field behaviour, and cosmological models built on rotation.
