Time and Relativity is a 1925 work by the astronomer Charles Lane Poor, a prominent early critic of Einstein's theory of relativity.
Overview
The work sets out Poor's objections to the relativistic treatment of time and to the observational evidence claimed for relativity. Drawing on his expertise in celestial mechanics, he disputes in particular the interpretation of the anomalous advance of Mercury's perihelion as a confirmation of general relativity, arguing that the classical evidence had been misused. It is part of the sustained campaign against relativity that he pursued through the 1920s.
About the author
Charles Lane Poor (1866–1951) was an American astronomer and professor of celestial mechanics at Columbia University (1903–1944). He was one of the most prominent American scientific critics of relativity in the 1920s, and the author of Gravitation versus Relativity (1922) and numerous critical papers.
