Die Methode der Physik ("The Method of Physics") is a 1938 German-language book by the philosopher of science Hugo Dingler, published by Ernst Reinhardt (Munich).
Overview
The book is a central statement of Dingler's methodical (operational) construction of the foundations of physics. Dingler holds that mathematics and physics can be given a secure foundation by starting from concrete "operations" as building blocks, and argues that this operational analysis leads uniquely to Euclidean geometry and Newtonian mechanics — leaving, in his view, no genuine freedom to choose alternative assumptions (against the conventionalism of Poincaré). The work is a key document of his Grundlagenforschung (foundations research).
About the author
Hugo Dingler (1881–1954) was a German mathematician, physicist, and philosopher of science, the leading Continental representative of operationalism (distinct from P. W. Bridgman's) and of methodical constructivism. His programme was later taken up and modernized by the Erlangen School (Paul Lorenzen and others).
