Yongfeng Yang (born 23 September 1976) is a Chinese researcher who works in water resources management in Shandong Province, China, and who studies Astronomy and Cosmology as an independent investigator. Yang is known for proposing a hierarchical two-body model of the universe, in which cosmic structures are organised as a nested series of gravitational two-body systems and in which the redshifts of distant galaxies are interpreted without an expanding universe.
Biography
Yang was born in 1976 and earned a doctoral degree from Beijing Forestry University in China in the field of ecological and environmental engineering. Yang subsequently took up work in water resources management in Shandong Province, China, and resides in Jinan. Alongside this professional career, Yang has pursued astronomy and cosmology as personal research interests.
Scientific contributions
Yang proposes that all objects in the universe are organised in an ordered series of hierarchical two-body systems bound by gravitation. In this picture, the two components of each two-body system orbit around the barycentre of that system, while each two-body system in turn orbits around the barycentre of a superior two-body system. From this hierarchical association, Yang argues that an approximately uniform velocity can be derived for the stars in a galaxy and for the galaxies in a cluster.
Yang applies the model to the interpretation of cosmological redshift. Rather than attributing the redshifts of distant galaxies to an expanding universe driven by dark energy, Yang suggests that successive hierarchical two-body contraction of clusters and galaxies causes the local universe to become increasingly void, and that this process offers an alternative account of the observed redshifts. These ideas were presented in the paper "Motions of Observable Structures Ruled by Hierarchical Two-body Gravitation in the Universe," first circulated in 2010 and revised in later years.
Beyond cosmology, Yang has authored independent papers on a range of topics in the physical and Earth sciences, including the origin of the asteroid belt, planetary rings and comets, the cause of tides, the effect of desert sand on global warming, and the driving mechanism of plate tectonics.
