R. Webster Kehr (born October 7, 1946) is an American writer, mathematician and accountant known for his self-published critiques of mainstream physics, particularly of Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity and the photon theory of light, which he rejects in favour of a classical luminiferous ether. He is also widely known as the founder of the alternative-medicine website Cancer Tutor and of the Independent Cancer Research Foundation. His scientific views fall well outside the mainstream scientific consensus and have not been published in peer-reviewed journals.
Biography
Kehr was born on October 7, 1946, in Jefferson City, Missouri. He served in the United States Marine Corps and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. Following his military service he spent two years as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He subsequently attended Brigham Young University, from which he graduated twice, earning degrees first in mathematics and later in accounting.
Kehr worked for about eight years at a telecommunications company in Overland Park, Kansas, where, because of his mathematics background, he became involved in a fiber-optics research project that he credits with prompting his interest in the physics of light. He later worked as a contractor for Northrop Grumman supporting the U.S. Army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He married Marit Olaug Liset, of Norway, with whom he has seven children.
Beginning around 2002, Kehr turned his attention to alternative cancer treatments, launching the website cancertutor.com and later founding the Independent Cancer Research Foundation in 2006. He led the foundation's research and writing on natural cancer treatments for more than a decade before retiring in 2015.
Scientific contributions
Kehr is the author of a number of self-published papers on physics and mathematics. None of his physics work has appeared in peer-reviewed scientific journals, a circumstance he attributes to resistance from the scientific establishment toward outsiders; mainstream physicists regard his conclusions as unsupported.
His principal physics work, The Detection of Ether (2002), argues that a stationary luminiferous ether fills space and serves as a universal reference frame for the propagation of light. On the basis of this model he contends that Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity is false and that light cannot be a particle, concluding that photons do not exist. In support of these claims he discusses experiments such as the Hafele–Keating experiment and cites Nikola Tesla and Albert A. Michelson as proponents of an ether. These positions contradict the well-established experimental foundations of modern physics, including special relativity and quantum mechanics.
Kehr has also written on mathematics and has expressed criticism of the theory of evolution.
