Thomas C. Andersen (Tom Andersen) is a Canadian physicist based in Meaford, Ontario, who works on the foundations of physics, General Relativity, and quantum foundations. He is an alumnus of the University of Guelph, where he earned a PhD in physics, and he conducts independent research investigating whether quantum mechanics and other physical phenomena can emerge from general relativity.
Biography
Andersen studied physics at the University of Guelph, completing a PhD in the field. Early in his career he was a member of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) collaboration, contributing to landmark measurements of solar neutrinos that demonstrated neutrino flavour transformation. He is a co-creator of the astronomy software Starry Night, developed together with Ted Leckie.
He is the founder and research director of NSciR, an independent research organization, and lives in Meaford, Ontario.
Scientific contributions
Andersen's research explores the idea that general relativity may serve as a foundational field from which quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, dark matter, and dark energy emerge. His project on emergent quantum mechanics investigates whether quantum behaviour can arise from high-frequency (above 1 THz) gravitational-wave effects. His work draws on pilot-wave and de Broglie–Bohm (Bohmian) interpretations of quantum mechanics, and he has proposed models addressing the dark sector.
Through NSciR he has also built and operated a Cosmic Ray Observer. He has presented his work at international meetings including the International Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation (GR22), the Emergent Quantum Mechanics conferences, and DICE, and has published in venues such as the Journal of Physics: Conference Series.
As a member of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory collaboration, he is a co-author of several highly cited neutrino papers, including "Direct evidence for neutrino flavor transformation from neutral-current interactions in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory" (2002) and related SNO measurements.
Honors
As a member of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory collaboration, Andersen was a co-recipient of the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics awarded to the SNO experiment.
