Stephen C. Bannister is an American economist based in Salt Lake City, Utah, whose research examines the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth. He is a member of the faculty in the Department of Economics at the University of Utah, where he also earned his doctorate.

Biography

Bannister received an undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. He subsequently spent a career in the high-technology industry, serving as a director at the software company Novell in Provo, Utah. He later returned to academia and completed a Ph.D. in economics at the University of Utah in 2015, with a dissertation titled Economic Growth with Unlimited Supplies of Energy. He has since taught in the university's Department of Economics, with teaching and research interests in economic history and development.

Work

Bannister describes himself as a macroeconomist focused on the detailed, dynamic, and fundamental relationship between economic growth and energy consumption. His research addresses the role of energy inputs in explaining historical industrial revolutions, the modeling of energy and economic development, and the connections among population dynamics, economic growth, and climate change.

He has also taken an interest in low-energy nuclear reactions (LENR), commonly associated with the cold fusion experiments announced at the University of Utah by Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons in 1989. Bannister has sought to raise awareness of the field within the university and has discussed efforts to reassess the historical reputation of that research.
