John Scott Strachan, known as Scott Strachan, is a Scottish inventor and researcher based in the United Kingdom whose work spans gyroscopic propulsion, thermoelectric energy conversion, optics, and crystal-based devices. He is best known within the alternative-physics community for his experiments on the anomalous behaviour of force-precessed gyroscopes.

Biography

Strachan is a prolific inventor holding patents across several fields, including thermoelectric conversion, optical elements, and materials technology. During the 1980s he collaborated with the physicist Harold Aspden on thermoelectric energy conversion, the two being named as joint inventors on a patent application for a thermoelectric energy conversion device filed in 1989. He remained active in inventing and in online research forums into the mid-2000s.

Work

Strachan built a single-gyroscope apparatus, sometimes referred to as the "Strachan Machine," to study the motion of flywheels undergoing forced precession. His principal experimental method involves suspending a gyroscope system from a long pendulum, at least six metres in length, in order to observe asymmetrical oscillation as the flywheel is force-precessed. He has reported that the apparatus vibrates strongly during operation, which complicates precise measurement, and that the effect can be demonstrated at relatively low rotational speeds.

Strachan has been careful to distinguish his position from stronger claims made by others in the field. He has stated that he has never claimed antigravity effects, describing instead unusual behaviour of force-precessed flywheels under certain conditions.

Beyond gyroscopic research, Strachan pursued thermoelectric conversion, reporting efficiencies in the region of 20 percent, and investigated crystal gyroscopes as possible solid-state alternatives to mechanical rotating devices.
