Russell S. Witte is an American biomedical engineer and Professor of Medical Imaging and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. He is known for developing hybrid medical imaging methods that combine light, ultrasound and microwaves, including acousto-electric imaging, thermoacoustic imaging and ultrasound elastography.
Biography
Witte graduated with Honors in Physics, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arizona in 1993. He then completed a doctorate in Bioengineering at Arizona State University in 2002, where he used electrode arrays to study sensory coding and learning-induced plasticity in the brain. As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan, he helped develop techniques to image the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. In 2007 he returned to Tucson to join the University of Arizona, where he holds appointments in Medical Imaging, Biomedical Engineering, Optical Sciences, Neurosurgery and Surgery, as well as in the Applied Mathematics and Neuroscience graduate interdisciplinary programs and the BIO5 Institute.
Work
Witte directs the Experimental Ultrasound and Neural Imaging Laboratory (EUNIL), which devises hybrid imaging methods that integrate light, ultrasound and microwaves to provide novel contrast. These noninvasive techniques, such as acousto-electric imaging, thermoacoustic imaging and ultrasound elastography, are intended to quantify changes in the electrical, optical and mechanical properties of tissue at high spatial resolution. He is regarded as one of the first researchers to apply the acousto-electric effect to biomedical imaging, with applications including mapping of cardiac and neural electrical activity. He is affiliated with the Arizona Cancer Center, the Sarver Heart Center and the School of Mind, Brain, and Behavior. Witte founded ElectroSonix, a spinoff company established to commercialize acousto-electric technology for fast imaging of cardiac arrhythmias.
