Russell "Rusty" G. Ashbaugh III (April 2, 1951 – June 17, 2022) was an American quality-systems and human-resources manager known among his associates for his wide reading and his interest in science, politics, and philosophy.
Biography
Ashbaugh was born on April 2, 1951, in Elkhart, Indiana, to Russell and Jean (Hansen) Ashbaugh. He attended the Stanley Clark School in South Bend, Indiana, and then Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts, where he played varsity football, competed as a varsity gymnast, and took part in the school's mathematics and cinema clubs. After graduating in 1969 he spent a gap year at Franklin College (Fleming College) in Lugano, Switzerland, before enrolling at Vanderbilt University, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in 1974.
Following his graduation, Ashbaugh joined the Elkhart Brass Manufacturing Company, where he led the human-resources function and developed the company's quality systems.
He died on June 17, 2022, at Franciscan Health in Michigan City, Indiana, at the age of 71.
Work
Trained in philosophy, Ashbaugh maintained a lifelong interest in ideas spanning science, politics, and philosophy. He was a prolific reader, and among the authors he favored were the economists and political thinkers Ayn Rand and Milton Friedman, alongside popular fiction by writers such as Lee Child and Tom Clancy.
