Ray Tomes (born 6 July 1947) is a New Zealand cycles researcher, economic modeller and software developer. He is best known as the originator of the Harmonics theory, a hypothesis that attempts to explain recurring cycles and the layered structure of the universe as the result of a fundamental standing wave and its harmonics. Based in Auckland, New Zealand, Tomes has been a prominent figure in the interdisciplinary study of cycles, though his theory lies outside the framework of mainstream physics and cosmology.
Biography
Tomes grew up in Auckland, New Zealand, where he continued to live. He studied mathematics and physics at university in the 1960s, and began a career in computing in 1967, working in systems software development and economic modelling. He developed economic modelling programs that were applied to forecasting the New Zealand economy.
In 1977, while carrying out economic modelling work, Tomes observed what he interpreted as recurring cycles in New Zealand economic data. He noted that these cycles had periods of approximately 4.45, 5.9, 7.15 and 8.9 years, which he considered to be close to whole-number fractions of a longer period of about 35.6 years, and that their frequencies approximated the proportion 4:5:6:8, corresponding to a major chord in music. This observation led him toward a broader interest in the study of cycles.
At the end of 1989, at the age of 42, Tomes retired from paid employment to devote himself full-time to cycles research and to what he termed "the Formula for the Universe." He subsequently spent some fifteen years working on the mathematics and physics of what became the Harmonics theory. He took up Vipassana meditation in 1998.
Beyond his research, Tomes was a three-time New Zealand Go champion and represented New Zealand at the World Amateur Go Championship in Japan on three occasions, placing eighth in 1984.
Scientific contributions
Tomes is the originator of the Harmonics theory, which he developed as an attempt to explain observed patterns of cycles and the structure of the universe. The central proposal of the theory is that the universe consists of a standing wave that develops harmonics, which are themselves standing waves; these are held to reinforce one another at particular scale ratios.
According to the theory, strong structures should occur in the universe at distance-scale ratios near 34,560, a figure Tomes related to a sequence of physical scales running from the Hubble scale through galaxies, stars, planets and moons down to cells, atoms and nucleons. He also applied the framework to a wide range of observed periodicities, including economic cycles such as the Kondratieff cycle, solar activity, earthquakes and commodity prices.
Tomes's work in this area is not accepted within mainstream physics or cosmology, and the Harmonics theory has been developed and promoted largely outside conventional academic channels. He connected his findings with the earlier cycles research of Edward R. Dewey after visiting the Foundation for the Study of Cycles in 1989, and became an active member of that organisation. He was later a major contributor to the Cycles Research Institute, which he helped establish in the late 1990s, and founded the online Interdisciplinary Cycles discussion group. Tomes has given numerous presentations on cycles and the Harmonics theory at conferences and seminars in various countries, and has produced educational material on the subject, including online videos.
