Michael J. Kelly (BSc, H.Dip.Ed., born 1947) is an independent researcher and retired science teacher who argues that the aether exists and that Einstein was mistaken to abandon it. He is the author of Did Einstein Get it Wrong? (2006), a short book setting out an aether-based "theory of everything" in which space is pervaded by antimatter and in which mass, gravitation and the wave-particle duality of light and matter are all consequences of that medium. He worked on the theory outside any academic institution, after taking early retirement from teaching.
Not to be confused with Michael J. Kelly, the Cambridge semiconductor physicist and Fellow of the Royal Society, who is a different person.
Biography
Kelly was born in 1947 and educated at John Hamilton High School in Liverpool. He took a B.Sc. in electronics at the Royal College of Advanced Technology, Salford, and then worked as a systems analyst for Hewlett Packard near Windsor, Berkshire.
He subsequently moved into education, undertaking postgraduate study in philosophy, psychology and education at Trinity College, Dublin — the source of the H.Dip.Ed. that appears after his name on his book — and went on to teach physics and chemistry for many years at St. Eunan's College in Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland. After taking early retirement he devoted himself to developing the unified theory of physics presented in his book.
His publisher, Trafford Publishing, is based in Canada, and the book is sometimes catalogued as Canadian on that basis; the biographical details published with the book place Kelly himself in Ireland.
The aether theory
Kelly holds that the aether was discarded prematurely. On his account the Michelson-Morley experiment did not show that no medium exists, only that the particular medium being sought was not the right one, and he offers his own explanation of why the experiment registered no drift. Einstein, he argues, then built the special theory of relativity on the absence of something that was in fact present, with serious repercussions for that theory.
In its place Kelly proposes that space is filled with antimatter, and develops the consequences from two axioms: that matter attracts antimatter, and that antimatter repels itself. The self-repulsion, he argues, keeps the medium distributed through space, while its attraction to ordinary matter draws it around material bodies; from this arrangement he derives an account of the cause of mass and a mechanism for gravitation, and he uses the same medium to reconcile the wave and particle descriptions of light and matter. He presents the whole as a "theory of everything" resting on simple axioms and deliberately stated without mathematical complexity, so that a general reader can follow it.
Kelly draws two further consequences. He argues that his model implies a geomagnetic reversal in the not too distant future, with catastrophic effects; and he proposes an experiment to be conducted on the Moon which he claims would demonstrate the existence of the aether directly.
