Michael Becker is a German author who, between 1988 and 1998, published a series of German-language books critical of aspects of Albert Einstein's special theory of relativity. His writings question the interpretation of the Michelson-Morley experiment, the reality of the Lorentz contraction, and the constancy and measurability of the speed of light, and argue for a reconsideration of the concept of the aether.
Work
Becker's books address recurring themes in dissident-science critiques of relativity theory. In Hat Michelson den „Äther" wirklich getötet? (1988) he examines whether the Michelson-Morley experiment truly disproved the existence of the aether, and in Gibt es die Lorentzkontraktion tatsächlich? (1990) he questions the physical reality of length contraction. Several later works, including Einstein hat nicht immer recht (1994) and the Lichtgeschwindigkeit series (1995-1998), argue that the speed of light behaves differently from the standard relativistic account and consider its measurement in the universe, the solar system, and through lunar laser ranging. His final titles of the period, Michelson-Morley, Spekulationen um Äther und Lichtgeschwindigkeit and Schimäre Einstein? (both 1998), summarize his skeptical stance toward mainstream relativity.
