Mark Liston Bender is a film director and writer based in San Antonio, Texas, United States. He is known for directing and writing documentary programs on astronomy and science, most notably the total solar eclipse film Easter Island Eclipse, and for founding the eclipse documentation venture Eclipse Across America Ltd.
Biography
Bender works as a documentary filmmaker and director. In May 2011 he served as a lecturer in filmmaking at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Since 1999 he has observed, filmed and studied solar and lunar eclipses on multiple continents, with recorded expeditions to locations including Great Britain, Zambia, the Mediterranean, Easter Island, Australia, Indonesia and the United States.
Work
For the National Geographic Channel series Naked Science, Bender directed the 2010 episode Easter Island Eclipse, which documented the total solar eclipse over Easter Island on 11 July 2010. The program featured astronomers Jay Pasachoff and Fred Espenak. During the 2016 total solar eclipse in Indonesia, Bender used an overlapping camera array intended to extend the filmed observation of totality.
His earlier directing credits include The Limits of Thermal Travelling (1995) and Deadly Run. Through Eclipse Across America Ltd. he later produced Jehovah's Watch, a film documenting a multi-year eclipse journey. His stated subjects of interest include the Electric Universe, Tesla, Consciousness, Human Energy and the Total Solar Eclipse.
