Unzicker takes up the origin of inertia, a question he notes even Feynman treated as unsettled, and the answer proposed by Ernst Mach: that the weakness of gravity follows from the sheer size of the universe. He notes that Eddington was first to see that the gravitational constant appears numerically related to the universe as a whole — c² divided by G giving roughly the universe's mass divided by its radius — and that Schrödinger had considered the same possibility as early as 1925.
