Dan Keith "Mac" McCoin (February 1, 1941 – January 30, 2010) was an American inventor and independent theorist. He held eight United States patents in the fields of energy and mechanical power transmission, and is best known within alternative-science circles for developing the UniKEF ("Universal Kinetic Energy Field") theory, a push-gravity model that he offered as an alternative to portions of Special Relativity.
Biography
McCoin was born on February 1, 1941, in Sparta, Tennessee. He received college-level schooling in mechanical, electrical and nuclear engineering, and completed post-graduate electronics-design training through the U.S. Army Nuclear Power Program (ANPP) at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, graduating with the class of 1965. He qualified as a First Class Operator and worked as an instrumentation and process-control-systems specialist.
He settled in El Paso, Texas, in 1973, where he lived for the remainder of his life. He owned and operated a research-and-development corporation that carried out a NASA/DOE contract. McCoin died in El Paso on January 30, 2010, shortly after the publication of his book on the UniKEF theory; a memorial service was held on February 27, 2010.
Work
McCoin was an active inventor and held eight U.S. patents in energy and drivetrain technology. His last patent, granted January 6, 2009, covered a differential and feedback-control system for a rotary opposed-piston engine (the "ROPE" engine), for which he also posted demonstration videos online.

Scientific contributions
McCoin was interested in energy sources that he believed were not yet measured or understood. He rejected the idea of perpetual motion, but held that permanent magnets and gravity were manifestations of underlying "universal energy flows," and he regarded gyroscopes and so-called "N" machines as objects of particular interest.
His central idea, which he called UniKEF (Universal Kinetic Energy Field theory) and said he first formulated in 1954, is a push-gravity model in which gravity is treated as a function of energy rather than of mass. In this view, bodies tend to equalize with the energy field surrounding them: objects with less energy move toward regions of higher energy field (drawing closer together) while gaining energy, and objects with more energy move toward weaker fields while losing energy. McCoin presented UniKEF as an alternative that, he claimed, could account for anomalous large-scale gravitational behavior without invoking dark matter or dark energy. He acknowledged that the model was not backed by extensive mathematics or experimental data; one chapter involving calculus was contributed by the physicist Dr. Edward Allard, and some gravitational testing was cited as tending to support the push-gravity interpretation. These ideas lie outside mainstream physics.
