Lyubomir Milchev Kovachev (born 19 July 1955) is a Bulgarian physicist known for his work in nonlinear optics, optical solitons, and nonlinear field theory. He is a professor and head of the Laboratory of Nonlinear and Fiber Optics at the Institute of Electronics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia.
Biography
Kovachev graduated with a diploma in physics from Sofia University in 1981. He joined the Institute of Electronics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences as a researcher in 1985. From 1988 to 1991 he was a doctoral student at the Institute of General Physics (the Prokhorov Institute) in Moscow, where he received his Ph.D. in physics in 1991. He later obtained the degree of Doctor of Sciences in physics from the Institute of Electronics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
He has remained affiliated with the Institute of Electronics since 1985, rising to the position of professor and head of the Laboratory of Nonlinear and Fiber Optics. He has also served as head of the Bulgarian consortium of the "Extreme Light" ELI-ERIC-BG research infrastructure. He is a member of the Optical Society of America, the Bulgarian Physical Society, and SPIE.
Work
Kovachev's research centers on nonlinear optics, optical solitons, and nonlinear field theory. His studies address the propagation of localized optical waves in dispersive and dispersionless media, parametric solitons, avalanche parametric conversion, non-paraxial propagation theory, optical shock-wave solutions, ion-free filamentation, coherent terahertz generation, and optical vortices, together with the numerical solution of the associated complex wave equations.
His more recent investigations concern new nonlinear mechanisms for the generation of coherent GHz and THz radiation from femtosecond pulses in isotropic materials, as well as a longitudinal polarization force leading to a proposed new type of collision ionization. He has authored more than 120 publications in international journals and conference proceedings.
