Konstantin Georgievich Korotkov is a Russian scientist known for developing the Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV) technique, a computer-based form of Kirlian photography that he and his collaborators promote as a means of measuring a purported "human energy field." A physicist by training, he has spent his career at academic institutions in Saint Petersburg and is the inventor of the commercial Bio-Well camera. His claims about bioenergy measurement are not accepted within mainstream science.
Biography
Korotkov has worked at universities in Saint Petersburg since the late 1960s. He became Professor of Computer Science and Biophysics at the Saint Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (ITMO University), a position he held from 1995 to 2014, and lectured there on non-linear electrodynamics from 1998 to 2010. Since 1998 he has also served as a senior researcher at the Saint Petersburg Research Institute of Physical Culture and Sport.
He is President of the International Union of Medical and Applied Bioelectrography (IUMAB) and has lectured internationally. Over a career spanning more than 50 years, he reports having published more than 200 scientific papers and 17 books, and holding numerous patents related to his instrumentation.
Work
In the early 1990s Korotkov developed Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV), also marketed as Electrophotonic Imaging (EPI), as a computerized extension of the Kirlian photography technique developed in the mid-20th century. The method applies a high-voltage electrical field to an object—commonly a person's fingertips—and uses a digital camera to record the resulting corona (gas) discharge, which is then processed by software into images and numerical parameters.
Korotkov interprets these corona-discharge patterns as reflecting a person's physiological and psycho-emotional state, and, more broadly, as a measurement of a "human energy field" or bioenergy. He has applied GDV to claims about stress and health monitoring, and to studies of the effects of environmental factors such as structured Water, music, and meditation on human physiology. He later commercialized the technology in the Bio-Well device, a compact GDV camera marketed for wellness and energy-field assessment.
These interpretations are not supported by mainstream scientific consensus. Corona-discharge imaging is a well-understood electrical phenomenon strongly influenced by physical variables such as skin moisture, pressure, temperature, and applied voltage, and the existence of a measurable "human energy field" of the kind Korotkov describes is not recognized within conventional biology or physics. His work is generally regarded outside the scientific mainstream and is associated with the dissident-science and alternative-medicine communities.
Honors
Korotkov has received a number of Russian and international awards from various organizations, which according to his biographies include the BrandLaureate International Brand Personality Award (2013), awards from the Ministry of Sport of Russia (2013 and 2017), and other national and organizational recognitions.
