Kelland David Terry (born November 15, 1933) is an American biochemist and molecular geneticist known for his early work linking nearby supernova explosions to mass extinctions and, in his later career, for developing an independent unified theory of the forces of nature known as VES Theory.
Biography
Terry earned a Ph.D. in molecular genetics from the University of Utah and pursued a career in research and academics before moving into the business world. During his academic career he was affiliated with the Department of Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology at the University of Kansas. After retiring, he wrote an extensive C++ computer program to play the card game bridge, which he made available online. He later turned his attention to physics and cosmology, formulating the theory he calls VES Theory. Terry resides in Carson City, Nevada.
Scientific contributions
In 1968, while at the University of Kansas, Terry co-authored with W. H. Tucker of Rice University the paper "Biologic Effects of Supernovae," published in Science. The paper estimated the probability that nearby supernova explosions had occurred during Earth's history and examined the biological effects of the resulting radiation. The authors suggested that cosmic radiation from supernovae could have caused the extinction of many exposed animals without the simultaneous extinction of plant life, proposing supernovae as one possible mechanism of faunal extinction. The work helped popularize the idea that supernovae may be a cause of mass extinctions and has been cited in later studies of the subject.
Work
In his later independent research, Terry developed VES Theory, which he presents as a unified account of the forces of nature. The theory proposes that the electric and magnetic fields surrounding a photon are composed of elastic strings: the negative electric field of "e-electrons," the positive electric field of "p-electrons," and the magnetic fields of "n-magnons" and "s-magnons." Terry maintains that the model is consistent with observations and experiments concerning the forces of nature. He set out the theory in his book VES Theory and the Forces of Nature and in subsequent lectures and writings.
