Jonathan Paul De Vierville is an American cultural historian, humanities scholar, and depth-analytical psychotherapist based in San Antonio, Texas. He is Professor Emeritus of The Humanities, History, and Interdisciplinary and Global Studies, and Director of the Great Ideas and Visions Experiences (GIVE) Honors Program at St. Philip's College of the Alamo Colleges in San Antonio. His teaching and research have centered on the cultural history of waters, spas, wellness, and balneology, as well as oneirology (the study of dreams), consciousness, sacred geometry, and new cosmologies.
Biography
De Vierville earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in American Studies from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Earlier he studied at the International College of Copenhagen and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, and he later trained at the C. G. Jung Institute for Analytical Psychology in Zürich, Switzerland. He received a Master of Science in Social Work from the Worden School of Social Service at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, and completed a Bath Master Certificate at the Sebastian Kneipp School of Physiotherapy in Bad Wörishofen, Germany. He earned a PhD in the Department of American Studies and Civilization at the University of Texas at Austin, with a dissertation on the history of American spas and healing waters.
For roughly three decades, until the COVID-19 pandemic, he owned and directed the Alamo Plaza Spa in the historic Menger Hotel in San Antonio. He is a retired Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor, and depth-analytical and archetypal psychotherapist.
Work
De Vierville's scholarship addresses the cultural history of waters, spas, wellness, and natural therapeutic health-care systems, alongside the study of dreams, consciousness, psyche, time, sacred geometry, and cosmology. He has led an experiential seminar series titled "Dream Times, Spa Cultures and Conscious Cosmos." He describes himself as a long-time crop-circle researcher and experiencer, facilitating workshops that explore proposed connections between consciousness, dreams, and crop circles, and relating these interests to ideas associated with the Electric Universe.
Honors
De Vierville has served as Secretary for the International Spa Association (ISPA) and its Education Foundation, and as a board member of the International and American Societies of Medical Hydrology and Climatology. He has served as Vice President of the Balneology Association of North America and the Hot Springs Association, and is a member of the Independent Crop Circle Research Association (ICCRA) and the Green Spa Network.
