John Thomson Paterson (29 November 1937 – 28 November 2023) was a Scottish-born physicist and electrical engineer whose professional career spanned defence electronics, digital telecommunications and aerospace, culminating in work on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. He held membership in the IEEE and the Federation of American Scientists and took an interest in independent research into aether-physics, theories of magnetism and anti-gravity.

Biography

Paterson was born on 29 November 1937 in Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of James and Margaret Paterson. He graduated from Leith Academy in 1955 and served an apprenticeship at Ferranti Ltd. He won a scholarship in electrical engineering to Heriot-Watt College in Edinburgh.

He married Irene in 1963. During his career he lived in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States, including Mukilteo, Washington, while employed by Boeing. He later retired to Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada, where he died on 28 November 2023, one day before his 86th birthday.

Work

Paterson began his career at Ferranti Ltd., working in electrical engineering, defence electronics and early computer development. In 1961 he joined EMI in London, where he worked in radar research and technology. He subsequently moved to Bell-Northern Research in Ottawa, Canada, where he worked on the digitalization of telephone communications. In 1997 he worked with NASA on rocket technology, and he later contributed to the development of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a project that continued through 2012.

Alongside his engineering career, Paterson maintained an interest in independent theoretical research, and his profile lists work on aether-physics, theories of magnetism and anti-gravity.

Honors

Boeing awarded Paterson a Technical Fellowship in recognition of his leadership and contributions prior to his retirement.
