Jerry V. Leaphart (born September 21, 1946) is an American attorney-at-law who has practiced civil and criminal trial and appellate law for more than four decades in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. In addition to his legal career, he has taken an interest in philosophy, metaphysics, astronomy and unconventional physical theories, including the Electric Universe model.
Biography
Leaphart earned a Bachelor of Arts from Wayne State University in 1968 and a Juris Doctor from the New York University School of Law in 1971. He was admitted to the New York bar in 1972, the New Jersey bar in 1979 and the Connecticut bar in 1994, and he is also admitted to practice before several federal district courts, the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Second and Third Circuits, and the United States Supreme Court.
He is the principal of the firm Jerry V. Leaphart & Associates, P.C. Over his career his practice has included civil and criminal trials and appeals as well as earlier work in international corporate law. His listed areas of practice include civil rights, constitutional law, labor and employment, criminal defense, personal injury, international trade and investment, real estate, and trial and appellate practice.
Work
Leaphart is known for representing clients associated with alternative research into the September 11, 2001 attacks. He acted as counsel for Dr. Judy Wood in the qui tam action Wood v. Applied Research Associates, Inc., a False Claims Act suit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York that challenged the accuracy of reports prepared for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) concerning the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. The case was dismissed and the dismissal was affirmed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 2009. He also assisted in efforts to submit Requests for Correction to NIST under the Data Quality Act.
His stated interests extend to philosophy, metaphysics and astronomy, and he has expressed sympathy for the Electric Universe view of cosmology and physics.
