Jerry A. Reynard is an American amateur cosmologist based in the suburban Maryland area who is the originator of the Comedy-Recycling Theory (C-R Theory), a self-published alternative cosmological model. Describing himself as academically unqualified but a lifelong enthusiast of the subject, Reynard has developed the theory as a personal project since the late 1970s.
Biography
Reynard has some college education to his credit, and his primary technical training came through the U.S. Navy Electronics Technician "A" school in the early 1970s. He went on to work in two-way radio repair and communications systems, from which he later retired. A longtime resident of the suburban Maryland area, he has described himself as having been interested in the workings of the universe since his early days and as an avid reader of popular science books and magazine articles. Cosmology remains a hobby for Reynard rather than a professional pursuit.
Work
Reynard traces the original insight behind the Comedy-Recycling Theory to early 1979, and he has revised the work over the years to account for new observations. The name reflects the humorous puns and wordplay in which the material is written, combined with the "recycling" cosmology it proposes.
The theory presents a picture of a universe in which matter and energy are continuously recycled through a closed, ordered system. In contrast to the mainstream view of an open, expanding cosmos with no center and no edge, the C-R Theory argues for a closed universe. It further proposes that the redshifts observed throughout the universe are almost entirely the result of a gravitational effect rather than of cosmic expansion, and it assigns black holes a central role in the recycling of matter.
The theory is distributed as a downloadable document rather than through peer-reviewed academic channels; a revision dated March 2006 was made available in PDF form on the project's website. Reynard also maintained a blog discussing the theory, which was active between 2009 and 2015.
