Jack H. Robinson is an American astronomer and Professor Emeritus of Astronomy at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He is an emeritus member of the American Astronomical Society and its Historical Astronomy Division, and his interests span astronomy, physics, the history of astronomy, and the distinction between science and pseudoscience.
Biography
Robinson spent his academic career in the astronomy program at the University of South Florida, Tampa–St. Petersburg, where he holds the title of Professor Emeritus of Astronomy. He is an emeritus member of the American Astronomical Society and belongs to its Historical Astronomy Division.
In retirement he has continued to teach, volunteering as an instructor in the Learning in Retirement program at the University of South Florida, where he specializes in courses on the physical sciences, particularly astronomy and physics. Among the courses he developed for the program is "Science and Pseudoscience," which examines the methods of science and the ways in which pseudoscientific claims differ from them.
Work
Robinson's scholarly interests include the history of astronomy and archaeoastronomy. In the Journal for the History of Astronomy he reviewed Archaeoastronomy and the Roots of Science, a collection edited by E. C. Krupp in the AAAS Selected Symposia Series, in which he assessed the study of ancient astronomical practices and their relationship to the origins of science.
Through his Learning in Retirement teaching and his "Science and Pseudoscience" course, Robinson has promoted rational thinking and public understanding of the physical sciences, emphasizing the distinction between established scientific findings and unsupported claims.
