Herbert Lubitz (died 13 December 2023) was an American chemical engineer, industrial researcher and lecturer in the philosophy of science, long resident in Wilmington, Delaware.
Biography
Lubitz graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in New York in 1950 and went on to earn a degree in chemical engineering from The Cooper Union. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict as a helicopter maintenance instructor.
He spent some thirty years with the DuPont company, retiring in 1985 as program manager for a line of chemicals used in the printing of high-technology circuit boards. He lived for many years in Wilmington, Delaware, where he was an active board member of Temple Beth Emeth and of the Jewish Federation, and volunteered for many years as a tutor with the Literacy Volunteers program.
Lubitz died on 13 December 2023 at the age of 91, in Providence, Rhode Island. He had been married to Joan Biloon for sixty-nine years.
Work
After his retirement from industry, Lubitz taught as an instructor at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute of the University of Delaware, where his courses covered economics and the philosophy of science.
A long-standing interest in metaphysics led to his enduring membership in the Theosophical Society in America. He contributed correspondence to the society's journal Quest, writing on questions at the boundary of science and philosophy, including the interpretation of Darwinian evolution.
