Harry A. Schmitz (born November 2, 1957) is an American materials scientist and technical marketing professional known within the dissident-science community for his work promoting and elaborating a model of a fractal cosmos. Much of this work builds upon ideas originated by his father, Harry W. Schmitz (1923–1979).

Biography

Schmitz became interested in the physical and philosophical nature of the universe as a high school student in the 1970s, when his father, Harry W. Schmitz (HWS), introduced him to the subject. He studied engineering at Stony Brook University, where he was awarded a doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering in 1987 after completing a dissertation on synchrotron x-ray topography.

From 1987 to 1992 he served as an associate editor of the magazine Solid State Technology, after which he pursued a career in technical marketing. He resides in Port Washington, New York. He is the father of Richard Schmitz, the 2007 New York State High School Outdoor Track & Field champion in the 1600 meter event.

Work

Schmitz's stated purpose has been to promote and preserve the ideas he learned from his father. To this end he typeset (in LaTeX) key chapters of his father's treatise and made a PDF version of those chapters available online. In the 1990s he reformulated a sampling of these original ideas by describing them in terms of a fractal cosmos, and in later years he authored several papers of his own elaborating on concepts originally described to him by his father.

In his fractal model, the cosmos is described in terms of distinct orders of universes, particles, substrates, and strata, with each universe characterized by the ratio of its radius to the effective radius of one of its constituent particles. He argued that this size ratio increases rapidly for higher-order universes and that a descending series of universes must terminate with the visible universe, presenting the fractal cosmos as a single integral whole giving rise to successive generations of universes. He also applied the model to questions of time standards, particle interactions, and gravity.

Schmitz has credited the Natural Philosophy Alliance and its successor, the Chappell Natural Philosophy Society, with providing a forum in which these ideas could be presented and with introducing him to a community of physics dissidents.
