Gabriel LaFrenière (October 4, 1942 – April 11, 2012) was a French-Canadian independent researcher from Québec, Canada, known for his self-published work advancing the idea that "matter is made of waves." Working outside the academic mainstream, he built an extensive model in which particles of matter, and the electron in particular, are described as standing waves in an Aether, and he illustrated these ideas with animated computer graphics.

Biography

LaFrenière lived in Bois-des-Filion, Québec. He worked independently, describing himself as knowledgeable in optics, waves, and physics, and he developed his framework over roughly a decade of self-directed research and computer modeling. He launched his website on the subject in September 2002 and continued to expand it until 2011, the year before his death. LaFrenière died on April 11, 2012.

Scientific contributions

LaFrenière's central thesis was that the material universe is made entirely of Aether, and that particles of matter are standing-wave structures within it rather than solid corpuscles. Building in part on the wave structure of matter ideas of Milo Wolff, he modeled the electron as a spherical standing wave formed from the superposition of incoming and outgoing waves. In his account, such a standing wave can move as a result of the Doppler effect, and this motion reproduces phenomena such as de Broglie waves, Lorentz contraction, and relativistic frequency shifts. He described a "granular" aether whose elements, separated by mutual repulsion, form a fabric of space from which electrons emerge as standing waves.

To present these ideas, LaFrenière created numerous animated graphics and simulations, including work on three-dimensional spherical standing waves. He collaborated with Philippe Delmotte on wave-simulation software and credited mathematical equations developed by Jocelyn Marcotte.

LaFrenière's model lies outside mainstream physics and was not published in peer-reviewed scientific journals; it is presented here as an example of independent, dissident-science theorizing on the nature of matter.
