Frederick Rothwarf is a physicist known for proposing a matter-antimatter cosmology based on a polarizable quantum vacuum. He is listed in The Worldwide List of Dissident Scientists.

Work

With the physicist Sisir Roy, Rothwarf developed a cosmological model in which the vacuum is treated as a degenerate Fermion fluid composed of polarizable particle-antiparticle pairs. In the paper "Quantum Vacuum and a Matter-Antimatter Cosmology" (arXiv:astro-ph/0703280), the authors argue that this vacuum leads to a variable velocity of light and a decelerating cosmic expansion, and they compare derived galactic-rotation and acceleration predictions with MOND-related observations. An earlier related paper, "The Time Dependence of Fundamental Constants and Planck Scale Physics" (arXiv:astro-ph/0311351), uses the same aether-like framework to examine how physical constants might vary over cosmological time.

Rothwarf's cosmological work builds on ideas developed with his brother, the superconductivity physicist Allen Rothwarf (1935–1998). These proposals depart from the standard model of cosmology and have not been adopted by the mainstream.
