Flavio Fontana is a researcher known for work on superluminal (faster-than-light) motions and their interpretation within special relativity. He is listed in The Worldwide List of Dissident Scientists.
Work
Fontana is a co-author, with Erasmo Recami and Roberto Garavaglia, of the paper "About Superluminal motions and Special Relativity: A Discussion of some recent Experiments, and the solution of the Causal Paradoxes" (arXiv:0709.2453, 2007). The paper discusses experiments that have been interpreted as showing faster-than-light propagation, argues that special relativity can be extended to accommodate superluminal objects (tachyons), and offers a resolution of the classical causal paradoxes originally posed by Tolman through the mechanics of tachyons.
This position lies outside the scientific mainstream, which holds that no signal or object carrying information travels faster than light in vacuum. Fontana and his co-authors argue instead that superluminal solutions are compatible with a suitably interpreted relativity.
