Felix Scholkmann (born 22 March 1982) is a German biophysicist and biomedical researcher based in Zurich, Switzerland. He is a research group leader at the Biomedical Optics Research Laboratory of the Department of Neonatology at University Hospital Zurich and a lecturer (Privatdozent, PD Dr. sc. nat.) at the University of Zurich, and he is also affiliated with the University of Bern. His work centres on biomedical optics and signal processing, but he also publishes on biophysics, integrative human physiology and foundational and anomalistic topics in the physical sciences.
Biography
Scholkmann graduated from the University of Applied Sciences Isny (Germany) in 2008, earning a diploma in physical engineering. His diploma thesis concerned near-infrared imaging (NIRI), a neuroimaging technique for the non-invasive measurement of hemodynamic and metabolic parameters of the human brain. He went on to complete a doctorate (Dr. sc. nat.) at the University of Zurich in 2014, and later obtained his Habilitation, becoming a Privatdozent at the university.
He subsequently held postdoctoral and research associate positions at the Biomedical Optics Research Laboratory of University Hospital Zurich and at the University of Bern, and he has undertaken research stays at institutions in the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Korea, Italy and the Netherlands. He currently leads research projects on cerebral hemodynamics and brain tissue oxygenation in preterm neonates at the Department of Neonatology of University Hospital Zurich.
Research
Scholkmann's principal research area is biomedical optics, in particular the development and application of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and cerebral NIRS oximetry for non-invasive optical neuroimaging. His broader interests span biomedical signal processing, neurophotonics and neuroscience, biophysics (including bioelectromagnetics and photobiology), integrative human physiology and computational modelling. He has additionally published on foundational and anomalies-related topics, including condensed matter nuclear science (Low Energy Nuclear Reactions) and theoretical physics.
He is a widely cited author, having co-authored well over one hundred peer-reviewed publications with several thousand citations. He is a member of the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG, German Physical Society), the International Society for Condensed Matter Nuclear Science and the International Society for Bioelectromagnetism.
