Eugene V. Stefanovich is a physicist and independent researcher known for a non-traditional reformulation of relativistic quantum theory in which the generators of the Poincaré group, including the boost (Lorentz) operator, are treated as interaction-dependent. He is listed in The Worldwide List of Dissident Scientists.

Work

Stefanovich is the author of the monograph Relativistic Quantum Dynamics: A non-traditional perspective on space, time, particles, fields, and action-at-a-distance, a long treatise developed in the "dressed particle" framework and posted on arXiv. In it he argues that space-time coordinates of interacting particles do not transform according to the standard, universal Lorentz formulas, because the boost operator carries interaction terms.

Applying this idea to the 2011 OPERA anomaly, Stefanovich wrote a paper, "Superluminal Effect with Oscillating Neutrinos", in which he proposed that the muon- and tau-neutrino components of an oscillating beam separate spatially, so that a detected component can appear to arrive early even though no particle exceeds the speed of light. He characterises the result as violating "the special-relativistic ban on superluminal signals" while, in his view, avoiding the usual causality objections. These positions lie outside the mainstream interpretation of special relativity and quantum field theory.
