Eugene Sittampalam is a Sri Lankan engineering consultant known for his self-published attempt at a unified "Theory of Everything" that seeks to reconcile general relativity and quantum theory using classical, Newtonian physics. He is a signatory to the 2004 "Open Letter on Cosmology" that questioned aspects of the Big Bang model.
Biography
Sittampalam holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Ceylon. Over some two decades he worked as an engineering consultant for international engineering firms, and he has described conceiving the germ of his physical theory while working in Libya. He has also been associated with ElectroFlow, a Missouri-based startup concerned with optimizing power consumption. He is based in Sri Lanka.
Work
Sittampalam is the author of a treatise setting out an alternative unified physics that he presents as a "Theory of Everything," aimed at joining the insights of general relativity and quantum theory. Working outside the physics establishment and without an advanced degree in the field, he argues that the problem can be approached with mathematics no more complicated than high-school algebra, and he claims to derive results such as the inverse-square law of gravity and the mass–energy relation from first principles.
His model departs sharply from mainstream physics: it favors classical Newtonian mechanics over Einsteinian relativity, proposes a steady-state and fractal universe, and advances unconventional claims about topics such as solar energy production and the origin of the solar neutrino problem. His work has not been accepted for publication in mainstream peer-reviewed journals, and it has been characterized by critics as fringe science.
Sittampalam is a signatory to the "Open Letter on Cosmology," a statement questioning the dominance of the Big Bang theory that appeared in New Scientist on 22 May 2004, in which he is listed as "Eugene Sittampalam, Engineering consultant, Sri Lanka."
