Engel Roza is a Dutch physicist and retired researcher from Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, known for proposing alternative theoretical interpretations of the origin of mass, the Higgs field and the magnetic monopole. He is listed in The Worldwide List of Dissident Scientists.
Work
Roza has published a series of papers on the foundations of particle physics and gravitation, several appearing in the journal Physics Essays and as preprints on arXiv. In his 2011 Physics Essays article "A hypothetical H-particle," he introduces a hypothetical particle with a field description analogous to that commonly used for the Higgs particle, arguing that such a construction allows quantum physics to be related to general relativity.
In related work, including the arXiv preprint "On the existence of the magnetic monopole and the non-existence of the Higgs-particle," Roza takes the existence of the Higgs field as a starting point but challenges its usual origin. Rather than ascribing the field to an undiscovered Higgs particle, he attributes it directly to electromagnetic energy, in particular to a magnetic charge accompanying the electric charge of elementary point-like particles, and argues that electromagnetic energy is itself the source of all mass. These proposals lie outside the accepted framework of the Standard Model of particle physics.
