Sebastian Hauk is a German-language author and independent theorist known for proposing an alternative, ether-based account of light propagation intended to replace parts of the special and general theories of relativity. He is listed in The Worldwide List of Dissident Scientists.
Ideas
Hauk sets out his ideas on the website Fragen zur Relativitätstheorie ("Questions on the Theory of Relativity"), where he questions the standard interpretation of Einstein's relativity and offers his own model. In his account the ether is real and rigid but is bent by the gravitational field, and is understood to be at rest relative to the cosmic background. He argues that light moves at a reduced speed (on the order of 150,000 km/s) relative to the ether under certain conditions, in contrast to the constancy of the speed of light in standard relativity. These positions place his work outside the scientific mainstream, which does not employ an ether and treats the vacuum speed of light as invariant.
