David Kuhness is a French-born Austrian physicist and architect whose scientific research is centred on surface science and focused electron beam based three-dimensional nanofabrication.
Biography
Kuhness was born in France and was raised and educated in Austria. He studied both architecture and physics in Graz, and worked for about seven years as a practising architect before returning to science. He subsequently completed a doctorate (Dr. techn.) in surface science, and carried out postdoctoral research at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin, Germany.
He later returned to Graz, where he has worked at the Institute of Electron Microscopy and Nanoanalysis (FELMI-ZFE) at Graz University of Technology and at the MATERIALS institute of JOANNEUM RESEARCH, in the field of nanofabrication and hybrid electronics.
Work
Kuhness's research addresses the growth, structure and properties of thin films and nanostructures at surfaces. His doctoral and postdoctoral work included studies of two-dimensional and ultrathin oxide materials on metal supports.
At Graz University of Technology he has worked on focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID), an additive, direct-write technique for depositing complex three-dimensional nanostructures. Within this area he has contributed to research on 3D nanoprinting of functional and plasmonic metal nanostructures, including gold nanoantennas and all-metal nanoprobes for atomic force microscopy, and on improving the speed and fidelity of the deposition process. This work has been associated with the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Direct-Write Fabrication of 3D Nano-Probes (DEFINE).
