Avtar Singh is an engineer and independent theoretical researcher known for his work on a consciousness-based, "spontaneous" extension of relativity theory, presented in his book The Hidden Factor: An Approach for Resolving Paradoxes of Science, Cosmology, and Universal Reality and in later journal papers on what he calls the Universal Relativity Model.
Biography
Singh holds doctoral and master's degrees in science and engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Bachelor of Engineering (Honors) degree from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in India. He has worked for some three decades in research and development in science and engineering, has published in professional journals, and has organized and chaired technical sessions at professional conferences. He has been a member of professional bodies including the American Nuclear Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and received a Best Paper Award from the American Nuclear Society as well as technical excellence awards from his employers. His later physics papers give his affiliation as the Center for Horizons Research in Dublin, California.
Work
Singh's central claim is that current physical theory omits the physics of spontaneity — the spontaneous conversion of mass into energy and motion — and that this omission is the source of many of the standing paradoxes of relativity, quantum mechanics and cosmology. He proposes incorporating observed spontaneity, which he identifies with consciousness in nature, into the theory of relativity, yielding what he terms the Universal Relativity Model (URM).
In this model a complete accounting of mass-energy conservation, including relativistic kinetic energy, is said to remove inconsistencies between Einstein's mass-energy relation, gravitational potential energy and electromagnetic energy. Singh argues that the model dispenses with the need for dark energy, dark matter and black hole singularities, predicts galactic rotation curves such as that of the Milky Way, and allows a nonzero photon rest mass to reach the speed of light by spontaneous mass-energy conversion without violating special relativity. He also uses the framework to offer a physical basis for the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and to argue against creation ex nihilo.
He presented "A New Theory of Spontaneous Decay Resolves Paradoxes of General Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, and Cosmology" at the XXII Texas Symposium on Relativistic Astrophysics, and "In Search of the Universal Reality and Purpose" at a Metanexus Institute conference in 2005. His paper "Origin of motion. I. Spontaneous mass-energy equivalence model resolves current physics and cosmology paradoxes" appeared in Physics Essays volume 31, number 4 (2018), followed by a second part treating quantum phenomena. He has also entered several essay competitions of the Foundational Questions Institute (FQXi), including "Questioning the Foundations" (2012) and "Wandering Towards a Goal" (2017).
Beyond physics proper, Singh's writing seeks to reconcile science, religion and spirituality through a universal consciousness-based account of reality.
