Ardeshir Mehta is a Canadian independent researcher, writer and self-described philosopher and polymath based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He is known within dissident-science circles for his writings critical of Albert Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity and of the logical foundations of non-Euclidean geometry.
Biography
Mehta was born in India and received his secondary education at the Bishop's School in Poona (Pune), India, where he obtained the Senior Cambridge School Leaving Certificate in 1959. He later studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel, graduating cum laude with a B.Sc. (Agr.) in 1976.
Between 1964 and 1967 he travelled extensively in Europe, principally in Italy but also in Germany, Switzerland, England and France, becoming closely acquainted with the art and culture of Italy. He subsequently settled in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, where he has pursued independent research and writing. He describes his interests as spanning the philosophy of science, phenomenology and epistemology.
Work
Mehta has written extensively in an effort to critically examine, and in his view refute, the logical validity of much of what is commonly understood to be geometry, especially non-Euclidean geometry and the geometry underlying the Theory of Relativity. His arguments are presented for a general readership, and he states that he aims to explain relativity, and what he regards as its flaws, in terms that a high-school student can understand.
A recurring theme in his writing is the "Twin Paradox" of special relativity, which he cites as the starting point of his critical interest in the subject. Taking Bertrand Russell's The ABC of Relativity as a model, Mehta compiled a series he titled the ABZ of Relativity, comprising twenty-six short papers, lettered from (a) to (z), each intended to explain relativity and its perceived shortcomings. His writings, which include critiques of articles by other authors and essays on geometry and the Lorentz transformation, have been circulated online and archived on independent-research platforms. As with much dissident-science commentary on relativity, his conclusions lie outside the mainstream scientific consensus, which regards special relativity as an experimentally well-confirmed theory.
