Alireza (Ali) Akhlagh Moayed is an Iranian-born physicist whose research has ranged from biomedical optical imaging of the eye to the physics of water and the Electric Universe model. He earned his PhD in physics from the University of Waterloo, Canada, in 2012 and later carried out post-doctoral research on interfacial water at the University of Washington.
Biography
Moayed completed his PhD in physics at the University of Waterloo, Canada, in 2012. During his doctoral studies, based in the university's Department of Physics and Astronomy, he published research on the functional and structural imaging of the eye and of ocular disease, including work on high-speed, high-resolution Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems for retinal imaging.
After completing his doctorate he became a post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of Prof. Gerald (Jerry) Pollack at the University of Washington, where he investigated the properties of interfacial water (the so-called "exclusion zone") and the effects of electric and magnetic fields on water, together with the implications of these properties for physical and biological phenomena. He subsequently taught physics at the University of Washington.
Moayed later trained in East Asian medicine, earning master's and doctoral degrees at Bastyr University, and became a licensed acupuncturist.
Work
Moayed's doctoral research focused on optical imaging of the retina, contributing to the development of Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography systems for in vivo imaging of ocular structures and function.
As a post-doctoral fellow he studied interfacial water and the exclusion zone, a region of ordered water that forms next to certain hydrophilic surfaces, examining how electric and magnetic fields influence the structure and behavior of water. He has also taken an interest in the Electric Universe model, which proposes that electric currents and plasma play a central role in shaping astrophysical phenomena.
Honors
Moayed was a conference scholarship recipient at Electric Universe 2012: The Human Story, held in Las Vegas.
