Ellis sets out his Ionic Growing Earth account, in which the same eight elements that formed the Earth also heated it for its first three billion years, water arriving around 1,400 million years ago solidified the molten crust, and land emerged above water around 470 million years ago on a planet of some 1,600 km radius. He then reinterprets the NOAA age-of-ocean-floor map, arguing its colour bands record sequential layering rather than the chronology plate tectonics reads into them.
