Electromagnetism 1 is a book by the electronics engineer Ivor Catt, published by Westfields Press (with a freely available online update).
Overview
The book presents Catt's unconventional approach to electromagnetic theory, built around the idea of the "energy current" — a transverse electromagnetic (TEM) step of electric and magnetic field that travels at the speed of light in the dielectric between conductors. From this starting point Catt reinterprets charge, current, and the behaviour of capacitors and transmission lines, and works toward what he called "Theory C" (the "C" for Catt), his proposed replacement for conventional electromagnetic theory. The book also raises the "Catt Question" (or "Catt Anomaly") about how charge on a conductor knows to move as a TEM step passes.
About the author
Ivor Catt (1935–2024) was a British electronics engineer known for pioneering work on high-speed digital interconnection and for a long-running critique of conventional electromagnetic theory. See also his Digital Hardware Design.
