The Nature of Time is a 1967 volume edited by the astrophysicist Thomas Gold (with the assistance of D. L. Schumacher), published by Cornell University Press.
Overview
The book reports on an interdisciplinary meeting held at Cornell University in 1963, convened by Hermann Bondi and Thomas Gold, on the nature and direction of time. Physicists, astronomers, and philosophers discuss the origin of the thermodynamic "arrow of time," the relationship between the time asymmetry of physics and that of cosmology and the expanding universe, and the connection between the local and cosmological arrows of time. It remains a frequently cited collection on the problem of the direction of time.
About the editor
Thomas Gold (1920–2004) was an Austrian-born American astrophysicist, a polymath who made pioneering contributions to cosmology (as a co-author of the steady-state theory with Bondi and Hoyle), the theory of pulsars, and geophysics. He founded and long directed the Center for Radiophysics and Space Research at Cornell.
