Cosmology is a monograph by the cosmologist Hermann Bondi, first published in 1952 by Cambridge University Press (reprinted 1960) in the Cambridge Monographs on Physics series.

Overview

Written soon after the term "Big Bang" was coined, the book aimed to establish cosmology as a distinct branch of physics. Bondi surveys the basic principles and the observational evidence, and reviews the cosmological theories of the day — Newtonian and general-relativistic cosmologies, the theories of Eddington, Dirac, and Jordan, Milne's kinematic relativity, and the steady-state theory (which Bondi himself co-created). For many years it was the standard introductory survey of the subject.

About the author

Sir Hermann Bondi (1919–2005) was an Austrian-British mathematician and cosmologist, best known as a co-author (with Thomas Gold and Fred Hoyle) of the steady-state theory of the universe. See also his Assumption and Myth in Physical Theory and the volume The Nature of Time, from a meeting he convened with Gold.
