Marko Rodin is an American independent researcher and inventor, the originator of Vortex-Based Mathematics (VBM) and of the toroidal winding pattern known as the Rodin coil. The coil is among the most widely replicated devices in the amateur new energy community, and a substantial body of experimental reports on it is catalogued on this wiki.

Origin of Vortex-Based Mathematics

By Rodin's own account, the number system did not begin as a physics investigation but as a religious inquiry. Raised in the Bahá'í Faith, he set out to find what he took to be the precise mystical significance of the Most Great Name of God, and converted its superlative form Abhá into numbers using the Abjad system, in which each letter of the Arabic alphabet carries a numerical value. Taking A = 1, b = 2, h = 5, á = 1, the letters sum to 9 — a number given repeated significance in Bahá'í scripture. From that starting point he developed the patterns he came to call Vortex-Based Mathematics.

This origin is worth stating plainly because it explains the structure of the system, which is organised throughout around the number 9 and around digit sums. It should also be said that VBM is not Bahá'í doctrine and carries no standing within that religion, which cautions against numerology.

Vortex-Based Mathematics

The system works in modulo-9 arithmetic: every number is reduced by repeatedly summing its digits until a single value from 1 to 9 remains. Two features are then treated as fundamental.

The first is the doubling sequence. Repeatedly doubling and reducing gives 1 → 2 → 4 → 8 → 7 (16) → 5 (32) → 1 (64), a closed six-step loop; halving traverses the same loop in reverse. Rodin identifies this circuit with what he calls "the longest free-flowing path of the electron", and the coil is wound to follow it.

The second is the standing-apart of 3, 6 and 9. These never appear in the doubling loop: doubling 3 gives 3 → 6 → 3, and 9 maps only to itself. Rodin treats 9 as the axis or "control" of the system and 3 and 6 as an oscillation about it, associating the triad with a flux perpendicular to the plane of the doubling circuit.

Rodin's most substantial technical statement of the system is "The Rodin Number Map and Rodin Coil" (2010), written with Greg Volk for the Proceedings of the NPA. It develops a notation for mapping the repeating number pattern onto a plane and then onto the surface of a torus, and shows how the map's "positive" circuits can be joined into a single continuous path by twisting the cylinder before closing it — which is what produces the coil's winding. The paper also derives the recommended geometry: the winding traverses 12 times around the cross section and 5 times around the circumference, a 5/12 ratio the authors note coincides with the perfect fourth of the equal-tempered musical scale.

The Rodin coil

Adjacent wires in the coil are wound to carry current in opposite directions, with gaps between the pairs corresponding to the 3-6-9 positions in the number map. Reported effects, collected in the 2010 paper and in the wider literature, include a displaced magnetic south pole, wireless power transmission and levitation. Two specific demonstrations are cited there: Jean-Louis Naudin placed iron filings above a running coil in the manner of Faraday and photographed the resulting pattern, which he reads as evidence for Myron Evans's B(3) field; and Jamie Buturff levitated a 64-gram magnet on a 3-volt supply.

Rodin has proposed a wide range of applications — toroidal-pinch fusion confinement, brushless motors, high-sensitivity antennas, propulsion, and computing and data-storage architectures. On this wiki the design has been taken up by Bill Ramsay, whose "Rodin Coil Design" (1995) is the most careful experimental report held here, and by Randy Powell, Jamie Buturff, Russ Gries and others.

Rodin has also taught in schools in Hawai'i, developing mathematics curriculum material.

Claims requiring sources

Promotional material associated with Rodin — reproduced in the earlier version of this page — states that the Rodin coil antenna won a United States military design contest and a government contract for a national alert warning system, and that leading scientists at Microsoft, NASA and Boeing have standing offers to work full-time on his ideas. No independent corroboration of these claims has been found, and they are recorded here as claims rather than as established facts. Anyone able to supply a citation is invited to add one.

Assessment

The fairest assessment of this material is the one Rodin's own paper gives. Its conclusion states that although many people have reported unusual phenomena with the coil, "to date no scientifically disciplined, quantitative, controlled studies have been published", and that the proper attitude is "the middle ground, neither accepting unsupported claims, nor rejecting ideas simply for lying outside conventional experience." That is a more candid statement of the position than most of the surrounding literature offers, and it remains accurate.

Two things should be distinguished.

The coil is a real physical object whose properties can be measured. A toroidal winding in which turns cross rather than lie parallel will genuinely differ from a conventional toroid in inductance, self-capacitance and resonant behaviour, and those differences are ordinary electromagnetism. Ramsay's approach — wind it, test it, report the results without overstating them — is the right way to proceed, and he was explicit that his coils did not match Rodin's specified proportions and that his results were not definitive.

The mathematics does not support the physics. The patterns VBM is built on are real arithmetic, but they are facts about base ten, not about nature. Digit sums reduce a number modulo 9 only because 10 ≡ 1 (mod 9); in base eight the same procedure would give residues modulo 7, and the whole structure — the doubling loop, the special status of 3, 6 and 9 — would be different. The "degeneracy" of 3, 6 and 9 that the paper correctly observes (modulo-9 division fails uniquely for exactly these) is the standard algebraic fact that Z/9Z is not a field: 3 and 6 are zero divisors because 9 = 3². These are genuine and well-understood properties of the ring of integers modulo 9. What has not been shown is why a magnetic field should be sensitive to them, since nothing about an electron is aware that humans count in tens.

The energy and levitation claims remain unverified. A magnet levitating above a coil is not by itself anomalous — magnetic levitation is ordinary physics — and what would be required is a measurement of power in versus power out under controlled conditions. The general caution documented across this wiki's new energy material applies: apparent excess power in pulsed and reactive circuits is very often an artefact of measurement, since a multimeter's volts × amps product is not real power when current and voltage are out of phase, a point Patrick G Bailey makes directly against claims from within this same community.
