Ken H. Seto (born September 9, 1936) is a Chinese-born American chemical engineer, businessman, and independent physics theorist. He is best known for developing a self-published alternative framework of physics and cosmology that he calls "Model Mechanics," which is based on the concept of absolute motion. From this framework he derives an "Improved Relativity Theory" (IRT) and a "Doppler Theory of Gravity" (DTG). Seto's ideas depart from established physics and have not been adopted by the mainstream scientific community.
Biography
Seto was born in Canton (Guangzhou), China, on September 9, 1936. He moved to Canada in 1950 and later studied chemical engineering at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, graduating in 1962.
His first position was with Polysar, where he worked as a technical service representative and was granted a patent in polymer technology. In 1967 he moved to the United States and joined a company called Protective Treatment as product development manager, where he was granted a second polymer-technology patent and oversaw the development of a number of new products. In 1979 he founded the Seto Chemical Co., which became a supplier to General Motors for one of its products.
Alongside his work in chemistry, Seto was active in the restaurant business, opening The Barnsider in Dayton, Ohio, in 1975 and The Hickory Tree in 1987. He later settled in Beavercreek, Ohio.
In the early 1990s Seto became interested in physics and cosmology and began developing the ideas he collected under the name Model Mechanics.
Scientific contributions
Seto's central proposal, Model Mechanics, is an alternative model of the universe founded on the idea of absolute motion, which he defines as the motion of an object relative to a stationary, light-conducting medium. In this framework matter and physical space are described in terms of what Seto calls the "S-Particle" (and systems of S-Particles) moving within an "E-Matrix," and he argues that the same underlying mechanism accounts for all of the forces of nature.
From Model Mechanics, Seto derives two further constructs. The first is the Improved Relativity Theory (IRT), which he presents as containing Einstein's special relativity as a subset while, in his account, remaining valid in the presence of gravity. The second is the Doppler Theory of Gravity (DTG), through which he seeks to unify gravity with the electromagnetic, weak, and strong interactions and to offer explanations for the accelerating expansion of the universe as well as for dark matter and dark energy.
Seto has promoted these ideas primarily through self-published books, conference abstracts, and online writing, and has proposed experiments intended to detect absolute motion. His theories rest on a preferred (absolute) reference frame and reject the standard interpretation of relativity; they have not been developed within, or accepted by, the mainstream physics community, and Model Mechanics is regarded as a fringe or independent-research work rather than an established scientific theory. He holds two patents in polymer technology.
Seto has been a longtime participant in online physics discussion forums and is associated with the community of independent researchers who question aspects of modern physics, publishing abstracts and giving video lectures through the John Chappell Natural Philosophy Society (formerly the Natural Philosophy Alliance).
