This category collects work on the nature of time: whether it flows independently of space or is a dimension of a spacetime manifold, whether it is absolute or relative, and what physical process a clock actually measures.

The dispute is foundational to much of this wiki. In special relativity, time is a coordinate mixed with space by the Lorentz transformation, and simultaneity is relative. Against this, researchers here argue variously for absolute or universal time in the Newtonian sense; for a Lorentzian reading in which moving clocks are physically slowed relative to a preferred frame while time itself is unaffected; and for the position — associated with neo-Hertzian electrodynamics — that if time is independent of space then the total time derivative d/dt is frame-independent and is the operator physics ought to use.
