Jeffrey Joseph Wolynski (born December 3, 1984) is an American independent researcher and self-published author known for developing and promoting the General Theory of Stellar Metamorphosis, a hypothesis proposing that stars gradually cool and evolve into planets. He is a prolific writer on the subject, having released several hundred short papers through open preprint repositories. His ideas fall outside mainstream astronomy and have not been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals or adopted by professional astronomers.

Biography

Wolynski is American and resides in Cocoa, Florida. Beginning around 2012, he began publishing a series of papers outlining what he calls stellar metamorphosis, circulating his work largely through preprint archives such as viXra, the General Science Journal, and personal websites and video channels rather than through established academic journals. He is affiliated with the Natural Philosophy Alliance community of independent researchers, under which he describes his work as that of a "Scientific Revolutionary." Over the following decade he authored hundreds of short papers applying his framework to specific stars, exoplanets, and Solar System bodies.

Scientific contributions

Wolynski's central proposal is the General Theory of Stellar Metamorphosis, which holds that stars and planets are not fundamentally different kinds of objects but rather the same object observed at different stages of a single evolutionary sequence. Under this view, a star is an early, hot, plasma stage, and over very long timescales it is said to cool, shrink, and differentiate, eventually becoming a rocky planet; correspondingly, every planet is interpreted as an ancient, "dead" star. He argues that the Earth should itself be treated as an astronomical object whose rocks and minerals record the later stages of this process, and he emphasizes qualitative, conceptual reasoning over mathematical modeling.

To organize his classification of objects along this proposed sequence, Wolynski developed a graphical tool he calls the Wolynski-Taylor Diagram, which plots bodies from young stars through to old rocky worlds as stages of the same evolutionary track. He has published work placing individual objects, such as the Moon and various exoplanets, on this diagram.

The theory is presented as an alternative to the standard astronomical account, in which stars form from collapsing gas clouds and are powered by nuclear fusion while planets form separately from a protoplanetary disk. Stellar metamorphosis lacks quantitative modeling, has not appeared in peer-reviewed literature, and is not accepted by professional astronomers, who note there is no known physical mechanism by which a hydrogen-dominated star could transform into a rocky planet. It has, however, attracted attention among some communities of independent and non-mainstream researchers.
