Duncan Shea McKean (September 8, 1957 – November 17, 2018) was an American craftsman, self-taught musician, and independent thinker from Salt Lake City, Utah, whose wide-ranging interests spanned physics, music, engineering, and philosophy.

Biography

McKean was born on September 8, 1957 in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he spent his life. He became a master craftsman and a self-taught musician, and was described as a seeker of knowledge and a philosopher. He approached challenges in construction, music, and life as problems to be solved, favoring creative and unconventional methods to realize his ideas. His craftsmanship remained in many homes and businesses throughout the Salt Lake Valley. He died on November 17, 2018 at the age of 61.

Work

McKean was largely self-taught across the fields that interested him. His practical work combined engineering and craftsmanship, and his home construction and finish work were carried out for numerous residences and businesses in the Salt Lake City area.
