Bruce Nappi is an American engineer and independent researcher, founder and director of the A3 Research Institute and the A3 Society. Trained at MIT in aeronautics and astronautics, he spent four decades in advanced technology before turning to foundational questions in physics and to the social and communication structures that, in his analysis, keep both science and society from correcting their own errors. He is best known in dissident physics circles for Space Lattice Theory, a lattice model of the universe that he presents as a Grand Unification and as a replacement for Einstein's theory of relativity.
Founder/Director of the A3 Research Institute, the A3 Society, the Humanist Friendship Group of New England. Co-founder of the School of the Medical Arts, the first all medical high school in the U.S. Eagle Scout on the 1965 North Pole Expedition.
Biography
Nappi graduated from MIT in 1969, holding BS and MS degrees in aeronautics and astronautics. As a young man he was selected as one of two Eagle Scouts to accompany a U.S. Navy expedition to the North Pole.
His subsequent career spanned some forty years of high-technology work, including government research in weapons and fusion energy, robotics, medical instruments, hospital systems and medical education. He served as director of a medical simulation center at the University of Florida College of Medicine, and co-founded the School of the Medical Arts, described as the first all-medical high school in the United States.
In 2010 he published two books drawing together his conclusions from science, sociology, psychology and sustainability research, and founded the A3 Society. In 2013 he established the A3 Research Institute, a non-profit organized to develop and implement discoveries supporting sustainability. Both organizations are based in Massachusetts. He is also a founder of the Humanist Friendship Group of New England.
Scientific contributions
Space Lattice Theory
Nappi completed and published Space Lattice Theory in 2015, describing it as a Grand Unification of physics that supersedes Einstein's relativity.
The theory rejects the picture of space as an essentially empty void. In its place Nappi proposes that the universe is densely packed with a single kind of small object, which he calls an "Aa". These pack into a crystal-like lattice, infinite in extent — in effect a solid, massive "crystalline ether" with a face-centered cubic structure and the simplest possible elasticity.
On this foundation, matter is not a set of independent substances but the set of topological defects in the lattice: matter and energy propagate through the lattice in the way that dislocations and elastic energy propagate through ordinary solid materials. From this single principle Nappi seeks to derive matter, energy, force at a distance, space and time together, treating gravity, electromagnetic fields and the nuclear forces as different structural patterns in one physical medium rather than as separate fundamental interactions.
Several conclusions follow that put the theory squarely at odds with the textbook account:
- Special relativity is not supported. Nappi argues that the observed universal speed limit — the speed of light — is a straightforward mechanical consequence of signal propagation in an elastic lattice, and therefore requires none of the relativistic apparatus of length contraction, time dilation or a relative simultaneity. The lattice supplies a real medium and hence a preferred frame, which relativity denies.
- Particle-accelerator results are reinterpreted. He regards the standard reading of accelerator data as very misleading, treating most catalogued subatomic particles as fragments produced in collisions rather than as pre-existing fundamental constituents of matter.
- Singularities are unnecessary. Lattice structures are offered in place of the infinite densities of black-hole theory.
Structured communication and the failure of scientific institutions
Alongside his physics, Nappi works on why established institutions — science among them — fail to recognize and absorb correct new ideas. His 2016 CNPS paper "Improving CNPS effectiveness through structured communication" applies this analysis to the dissident science community itself, arguing that unstructured discussion wastes the community's effort and that formally structured deliberation is needed if a body of critics is to converge on conclusions rather than merely repeat positions. The A3 Research Institute has pursued this line through work on structured deliberation tools, including a "Deliberatorium".
The same theme runs through his Collapse 2020 books. There he argues that social collapse is not fundamentally caused by resource depletion, crop failure or environmental degradation — these he treats as symptoms — but by flaws built into institutions by incompetent leadership, and ultimately by limits in how human beings reason and communicate. His proposed remedy, "Personalized Democracy", would give citizens direct access to government and direct control of legislation.
His A3 framework centres on what he terms "Awareness Level 3" (A3), a level of awareness he distinguishes from the "A2" reasoning he takes to be typical, with social progress depending on collaboration between them.
CNPS activity
Nappi has been an active participant in the John Chappell Natural Philosophy Society. At the CNPS 2018 conference he organized and ran the "Physics Grand Prix", in which competing physics theories advanced according to predetermined algorithms, wrote the script for the first CNPS "Science on Trial" production, and gave his own talk. He has also served as facilitator for CNPS projects including "GPS and the Speed of Light", "Expansion Tectonics" and "Relational Mechanics", and has written reviews of other alternative physics programs.
