Common Sense Science (CSS) is an American non-profit research and education corporation, founded in 1997 by the electrical engineer David L. Bergman, dedicated to developing a classical, geometric alternative to quantum mechanics in which elementary particles are real physical objects with real shape and size rather than dimensionless points.
The name states the programme's premise: that physical theory should be answerable to ordinary standards of intelligibility — that every effect has a cause, that objects have definite properties whether or not anyone is observing them, and that a model which cannot be pictured is not yet an explanation. Its founding claims are that the universe and all natural phenomena are fundamentally electrical in character, and that matter is best described using geometric models set in absolute time and Galilean space.
CSS is unusual among alternative-physics efforts in three respects: it produced a sustained, multi-decade research programme rather than a single thesis; it published a regular quarterly journal, Foundations of Science, for more than twenty years; and it is openly and explicitly grounded in a Christian creationist worldview, which its members regard as the source of the realist and causal commitments that classical physics once shared and modern physics abandoned.
History
The intellectual lineage CSS claims runs back to the toroidal ring or "magneton" model of the electron proposed by Alfred Lauck Parson in 1915 and developed by Arthur Holly Compton in the years following — a line of work largely abandoned after the success of quantum mechanics in the late 1920s.
Thomas G. Barnes (d. 2001), Professor Emeritus of Physics at the University of Texas at El Paso and author of Foundations of Electricity and Magnetism, Space Medium, Physics of the Future and Science and Biblical Faith, was the senior figure who revived this classical approach in a creationist setting. Bergman, having concluded in 1980 that natural phenomena are fundamentally electrical, published his spinning charged ring model of the electron with J. Paul Wesley in Galilean Electrodynamics in 1990. At about the same time he met Charles W. Lucas, Jr., whose independent work on a universal electrodynamic force law had reached compatible conclusions.
Bergman incorporated Common Sense Science, Inc. in 1997 as a non-profit providing research and education in fundamental physics, serving as its president and as editor and publisher of its journal. Later participants included Glen C Collins, Joseph C Lucas and others. The organization presented its work at scientific conferences — it was a regular presence at the Natural Philosophy Alliance — and also to churches, creation-science fellowship groups, Christian schools and colleges, in the United States and internationally.
Following Bergman's death in June 2020 the organization's public activity wound down. Its website, commonsensescience.net, has since lapsed; the domain now hosts unrelated commercial content, and the CSS papers survive only in the Internet Archive.
Theory
Core principles
CSS theory rests on a small number of stated commitments:
- The law of cause and effect. Every physical effect has an identifiable physical cause. Bergman's "The Law of Cause and Effect: Dominant Principle of Classical Physics" (2004) treats this as the dominant principle of classical physics and its abandonment as the central error of the twentieth century.
- Physical realism. Particles possess definite properties — position, shape, size, charge distribution — independently of measurement.
- Electrical character. All natural phenomena, including inertia, gravitation and nuclear binding, are ultimately electromagnetic.
- Absolute time and Galilean space, rather than the spacetime of relativity.
- Geometric models with as few free parameters as possible, whose consequences are derived rather than fitted.
The ring models
The programme's technical centre is the proposition that the electron is a uniformly charged, spinning ring rather than a point. In the Bergman–Wesley formulation, four parameters — ring radius, half-thickness, total charge and tangential velocity — are fixed by four measured properties (mass, charge, spin, magnetic moment), and the model then delivers several results as consequences: stability under electromagnetic forces alone with no ad hoc binding force, no radiation, a radius equal to the rationalized Compton wavelength, the gyromagnetic ratio of 2, and the anomalous magnetic moment to higher order.
The same approach was extended to the proton and neutron, to nuclear structure and binding, to the hydrogen atom, and — through the FORMS project (Fields of Real Molecular Structures) — to molecular structure. Lucas's contribution was a universal electrodynamic force law intended to unify electromagnetic, nuclear, gravitational and inertial forces within the same classical framework, and a later charge-fiber model of elementary particles.
Relation to creationism
CSS did not treat its theology as separable from its physics. Papers such as Bergman's "Conflict of Atomism and Creationism in History" (1998) and its 2011 revision, the two-part "Science of Origins" (2007), and "Design Vs. Chaos: A New Model of the Atom Based on Classical Science and a Biblical World View" argue that the assumptions which make science possible — an orderly, intelligible, law-governed reality — are the assumptions of a created universe, and that atomism and later quantum indeterminism represent a philosophical retreat from them.
Readers should weigh this as CSS itself framed it. The organization's technical claims about the spinning ring are testable propositions about charge distributions, and stand or fall on that basis regardless of the worldview that motivated them; but CSS explicitly presented the worldview as the reason the physics took the shape it did, and an account that omitted it would misrepresent the organization.
Foundations of Science
CSS published a quarterly journal titled Foundations of Science, edited by Bergman, running from the late 1990s into the 2010s and carrying most of the organization's research output — the ring models, the universal force law, the origin-of-inertia and origin-of-gravity series, and its historical and philosophical essays.
Note on a name collision. This journal is not the peer-reviewed philosophy-of-science journal Foundations of Science published by Springer, which shares its title. Papers on this wiki catalogued under that journal name may belong to either publication, and entries citing Bergman, Lucas, Collins or other CSS authors with "FoS" volume/number references (e.g. FoS V13N1) refer to the CSS quarterly.
Reception
CSS has received no engagement from mainstream physics. The standard objection to its central model is experimental: high-energy scattering shows no electron substructure down to roughly 10-20 m, some seven orders of magnitude below the Compton-wavelength ring the model requires, and the pointlike electron of the Standard Model agrees with every measurement made, including the anomalous magnetic moment computed to twelve significant figures. The toroidal ring tradition is classified in the standard reference literature as obsolete. CSS's creationist commitments have also drawn criticism from science-blogging critics of creationism, who treat the physics as motivated reasoning.
The CSS reply, argued at length in Bergman and Lucas's "Credibility of Common Sense Science" (2003), is that predictive accuracy is not the same as physical understanding; that a formalism which computes the electron's magnetic moment while denying the electron any structure from which that moment could arise has bought precision at the cost of explanation; and that the unresolved question of why a point charge does not explode under its own Coulomb repulsion is a real defect that the mainstream has declared ill-posed rather than answered.
Within the dissident community CSS was among the better-organized efforts of its period, and its participants — Bergman, Lucas, Barnes, Collins — remain widely cited in the classical-particle literature catalogued on this wiki.
