Domina Eberle Spencer (September 26, 1920 – May 2022) was an American mathematician, a longtime Professor of Mathematics at the University of Connecticut, and one of the most prolific figures in twentieth-century dissident physics. A child prodigy, she entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a high-school student in a summer program and stayed to earn three degrees — an S.B. in Physics (1939), an S.M. in Mathematics (1940), and a Ph.D. in Mathematics (1942, at the age of 21) under the geometer Dirk Jan Struik. Over a career spanning more than seventy years she authored some 300 technical papers across mathematics, optics, illuminating engineering and the foundations of electrodynamics.
Spencer is best known for her decades-long scientific partnership with the MIT electrical engineer Parry Moon (1898–1988) — whom she later married — and for the New Gaussian Electrodynamics she developed in her later years, a reformulation of electromagnetic theory built on Ampère's original force law that dispenses with Einstein's special relativity. She co-founded the Natural Philosophy Alliance (NPA) in 1993 and served as its long-standing president. She died in May 2022 at the age of 101.

Academic Career
Spencer joined the University of Connecticut as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics in 1950 and rose to full professor, remaining on the faculty for the rest of her long career. She also taught at American University, Tufts University, and Brown University. Beyond her work in electrodynamics, she made lasting contributions to the science of lighting and vision — including studies of color space, trichromatic data and the visual perception of illumination — and in 1962 she was elected a Fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) for her contributions to the art and science of illumination.
Parry Moon and the Theory of Holors
Spencer's collaboration with Parry Moon began in the 1940s and produced a long series of joint papers and textbooks; the two married in 1961. Together they wrote several influential reference works, most notably the Field Theory Handbook (1961), a widely used compendium of coordinate systems and their differential equations. They also developed the concept of the holor — a mathematical object generalizing scalars, vectors and tensors — set out in their book Theory of Holors (1986).
New Gaussian Electrodynamics
During the 1950s, Spencer and Moon co-authored a series of articles on electrodynamics and induction founded on Ampère's original force law, deriving results at odds with Einstein's theory of relativity. After Moon's death in 1988, Spencer became increasingly active in alternative physics, continuing to develop what she called the New Gaussian Electrodynamics — a theory that operates without special relativity and stands in the Gaussian–Weberian–Ritzian tradition. With Gauss, she held that the most fundamental task of electrodynamics is to discover the correct equation for the force between relatively moving charges. She co-founded the Natural Philosophy Alliance in 1993, served as its president, and presented dozens of papers at its annual meetings over nearly two decades.
